Capture a useful comparison#

  1. Open Live cost (Play In Editor).
  2. Start Play In Editor.
  3. Repeat the gameplay sequence you want to measure.
  4. Select By class or By owning actor.
  5. Use Pause to hold a result while inspecting it.

When measurement is set to Off in preferences, press Measure manually.

Read the columns#

Column Meaning
Ticking Objects currently ticking in the selected view.
Ticks/frame Tick calls per frame.
ms/frame Time spent ticking per frame.
us/tick Average time per tick call.
Peak ms Highest measured frame cost.
Event Tick ms Time spent in Blueprint Event Tick.

Use Last N s for a recent window and Whole session for the session average. Reset starts a fresh comparison.

Compare like with like#

Use the same scene, actor counts, world selection, and gameplay sequence. By owning actor helps compare the cost of an actor together with its components.

Measurement adds some overhead. Use the numbers to identify relative hot spots and confirm important findings with Unreal Insights.

Know the scope#

This view is not total frame time. It does not count timers, ticks on worker threads, ticks while the game is paused, rendering, or clients running in a separate process. Editor-world ticks count only with Include The Editor World on.

Stopping play leaves the last results available for review.
